Board Member Job Description
Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance
Member of the Board of Directors
Our Purpose
To connect those in need with the help they need.
We are a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization that supports families affected by addiction, disseminates information of where and how to obtain treatment for addiction, supports those in recovery and educates our community about substance abuse and addiction.
Position
The Board supports the work of DSAA and provides purpose-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by DSAA’s Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include: 

 

Leadership, governance and oversight
 Serving as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as she develops and implements DSAA’s strategic plan
 Evaluating the impact, and regularly measuring performance and effectiveness of the operations
 Approving the annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities
 Contributing to annual performance evaluations of the Executive Director
 Partnering with the Executive Director and other Board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried
 Serving on committees, task forces and taking on special assignments
 Acting as a good ambassador for the organization
 Identifying and recruiting additional Board Members.
Fundraising
DSAA Board Members will consider DSAA a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that DSAA can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, DSAA would appreciate if Board members could make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. This contribution is not required.

 

Board terms/participation
DSAA’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held quarterly, and committee meetings will be scheduled and held when appropriate.
Qualifications
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about DSAA’s purpose and who has a track record of leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His or her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
 A commitment to and understanding of DSAA’s beneficiaries
 Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of DSAA’s beneficiaries
 Ability to cultivate relationships and building consensus among diverse individuals
 Experience with leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or nonprofits
 Experience in fundraising for nonprofit organizations.
Service on DSAA’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for nominal expenses incurred in carrying out Board Member’s duties.
