Business Description

Many documents, including cemetery records, obituaries, local news articles, artifacts, maps, genealogy books, and many other resources are available for the public to view and research.  The Society also has a large collection of historical photographs and postcards for the community to look through and enjoy. In 2019, the Society will begin to convert these paper documents to digital format for easier access and to preserve for future generations. This conversion will take considerable time and money.

This fall, the Society also plans to open its new addition, the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, which is a completely renovated 1842 one-room schoolhouse.  The schoolhouse renovation has been a five-year project with generous support from the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, the Clarence Shock Foundation, Engle Printing and Publishing Co., Inc., and many other financial and in kind contributions from individuals and local businesses.  The schoolhouse will become the Society’s regular meeting room for monthly programs and eventually will be available for other community needs.

Once the schoolhouse is occupied and in use for meetings, the former church that serves as the Society’s museum will be redesigned to accommodate the new Clarence Schock Foundation artifacts.  New show cases will be needed to house and display not only the Schock artifacts, but also the Society’s large collection of historical items manufactured or used in the Mount Joy Area.

While the future of the JAHS is bright, more members are needed to support this effort, both financially and in working members.  Annual membership dues are only $20. During the membership drive, stands will be set up at local businesses and at Winterfest. Interested persons can also visit the Society’s website at www.mountjoyhistory.com to complete an online application.  Additionally, hard copy applications are available at the Historical Society Museum, 120 Fairview Street, Mount Joy, on Sunday afternoons from 1 – 4 p.m., and at the monthly meetings held the third Monday of the month from March through November.  For continued updates also visit the Mount Joy Area Facebook page.
